"Finders Keepers" -- 01/07/2010
Lincoln City is now in their tenth year of the infamous glass float giveaway, which came to be known as "Finders Keepers." Ending Memorial Day weekend, there are still plenty of handblown glass treasures to be found on the seven miles of beaches. The hand-crafted glass balls are made by artists from several different studios and placed on the beach by a committee of volunteer "float fairies." They are a secretive bunch, women and men who wear disguises, change cars and mix destinations so that no-one, not even the volunteer coordinator, knows exactly where the floats will be hidden each week.
Here are some helpful tips to finding your 2009-2010 floats:
- Floats are found above the high tide line and below the embankment, and they are never placed on the cliffs or in vulnerable beach grass areas.
- They are not hidden during dangerous surf or storm events.
- If you do find one, be sure to call the Lincoln City VCB at 800-452-2151 or 541-996-1274, and register your float. They'll send a Certificate of Authenticity and information about the artists who crafted it.
